The Best Whipped Body Butter Recipe For Dry Skin

Bright natural dining room nook with vases plates and fruits on the table.

This is THE best, whipped body butter recipe for dry skin. It's been tested in the dry heat of Arizona where I live. It would no doubt be just as soothing and moisturizing in the cold, northern winters where forced-air heating makes your skin crack. Ouch!

This easy DIY whipped body butter is a blend of buttery, skin-softening oils and protective shea butter. The texture is light, soft and it melts almost instantly on your skin. For a deeply nourishing self-care treatment, rub the whipped butter on your whole body just after a shower or bath when your skin is slightly damp. It also makes a delicious balm for massage.

Oils to nourish and relieve dry skin

This recipe was formulated with some of the best oils to nourish and relieve dry skin:

  • Shea Butter

  • Apricot Kernel Oil

  • Jojoba Oil

  • Hemp Oil

  • Argan Oil

Shea butter is a deep moisturizer that helps heal the skin. It’s also rich in skin-loving vitamins A and E. When buying shea butter, I recommend looking for pure, all-natural, and unrefined shea butter that still contains all its natural potency. It will be beige in color, semi-soft, with a characteristic nutty fragrance. Beware of refined shea butter that may be white or another color without the distinctive fragrance.

The apricot kernel and jojoba oils in this recipe soften, tone, and revitalize the skin and support its natural protective barrier. These nourishing oils also ensure that the finished body butter penetrates deeply into your skin without an oily sheen. Hemp oil is rich in beneficial fatty acids, moisturizing to dry skin, rejuvenating, and anti-inflammatory. The argan oil boosts skin cell production, increasing elasticity and reducing skins of aging, and helps protect against harsh environmental conditions.

Whipped Body Butter Recipe for Dry Skin

Yields ~ 6-8 ounces

Whipped Body Butter Ingredients:

3 oz. (by weight) Shea Butter, chopped if necessary
2 fl. oz. (60 ml) Apricot Kernel Oil
1 tbsp. (15 ml) Jojoba Oil
2 tsp. (10 ml) Hemp Oil
1 tsp. (5 ml) Argan Oil

Optional: Essential Oils of your choice (5-10 drops per ounce of body butter)

Instructions:

Place the apricot kernel, jojoba, hemp, and argan oils in a mason jar and place the jar in a small pot of simmering water (not boiling). You can also use a double boiler to warm the oils if you have one. Allow the oils to warm for about 10 minutes. Place shea butter in the jar with the warmed oils. Once the shea butter begins to melt remove the pot from the heat. Continue stirring until the shea butter is completely melted. Carefully remove the mason jar from the pot and wipe water from the sides of the jar, being careful not to get water in the oil mixture. Water can contaminate the body butter and reduce its shelf life.

Pour the warm oil mixture into a mixing bowl and place it in the refrigerator to cool, checking every 15 minutes. Once the mixture begins to solidify remove it from the refrigerator. Using a standing mixer or electric hand mixer, start to whip on low speed and slowly work up to high speed. Blend until ingredients are incorporated and the butter is light and fluffy. Add essential oils of your choice and blend again to quickly incorporate the essential oils. Scoop into clean containers and label! Store in a cool place, away from heat. Shelf life is usually 1-2 years.

Pro Tip: Keep an eye on the pot and be careful not to overheat the shea butter. Overheating may cause your finished product to become grainy. It's still usable but doesn't feel as nice going on.

I hope your skin loves this whipped body butter recipe as much as mine does. Your friends and family will love it too. Consider whipping up a large batch and filling pretty jars as gifts. You might want to include the recipe—or if not, plan to become your family's designated maker of this skin-loving body butter. They will definitely be asking for more.
